Synopsis: June, 1994. 11-year-old Laura and her family move to a new home at the end of the school year to make room for the new baby, which is due in August. Laura dresses like a typical boy of the time period, and sports a boys' haircut for the time period as well. When the family moves and Laura begins exploring the new neighborhood, the other children in the community assume Laura is a boy. Laura does not correct them, and rather, assumes the identity of Michael amongst her new friends, unbeknownst to her parents and younger sister. As the summer rolls along and the start of the new school year rapidly approaches, events unfold which reveal Laura/Michael's birth-assigned gender, forcing Laura/Michael and her family to confront a myriad of issues which all simultaneously come to a head. Tomboy is the story of one individual's struggle with gender identity and gender roles, showcasing the immense struggles that gender non-comforming individuals have historically faced, painting a picture of how far society has come, while simultaneously pointing out how far we still have to go.
